A little-known yet essential facet of Montreal’s heritage is undergoing a renaissance: the painted decorations of the Notre-Dame Basilica are being meticulously restored as part of a major revitalization project for the iconic building.
These artworks, often overlooked by the general public, had suffered the ravages of time: humidity, dust, microorganisms, and cracks had dulled their brilliance and threatened their integrity. A layer of grime obscured the original colors, while some areas showed critical detachment.
The restoration, led by a multidisciplinary team, combines scientific precision, artistic expertise, and historical sensitivity. Each intervention is preceded by an in-depth analysis of archival documents and original materials to ensure the authenticity of the works is respected. The process includes cleaning, consolidation, color reintegration, and the application of long-lasting protective coatings.
“What we’re restoring to the basilica is not just its visual beauty, but a part of its collective memory,” explains Élise Tremblay, chief conservator. “Each layer of paint tells a story—of an era, an intention, a faith. Our role is to reveal them without betraying them.”
The challenges are many: difficult access to certain areas, overlapping previous restorations, oxidized varnishes… Every detail matters in preserving the soul of this heritage gem.
