Spotlight on the Basilica: when spirituality and culture coexist
At the crossroads of the sacred and the stage, Montreal’s Notre-Dame Basilica shines as both a place of worship and a cultural hub, balancing spirituality and entertainment. Positioned between liturgical respect and artistic innovation, every event, every installation, every projection is carefully overseen by the Notre-Dame Basilica Foundation in order to preserve the site's spiritual mission while also opening it to modern cultural experiences.

When a basilica becomes a stage
For several years now, the Notre-Dame Basilica has hosted major artistic projects, ranging from the AURA show created by Moment Factory to immersive candlelit concerts. However, unlike a museum or exhibition centre, the building remains first and foremost an active place of worship. This dual identity requires a subtle, creative, and respectful balance.
The Foundation ensures balance
Created to support the preservation and promotion of the Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal’s heritage, the Foundation acts as a guardian of balance. It oversees the selection of cultural projects, ensures the respect of the liturgical calendar, and makes sure that artistic interventions do not interfere with religious celebrations nor the dignity of the space.
Far from opposing faith and culture, this approach encourages their meeting in a spirit of openness, allowing the general public and people of all beliefs to access a wide range of cultural experiences. Each project and event is carefully evaluated according to these principles.
AURA: an example of successful symbiosis
Launched in 2017 and having attracted tens of thousands of visitors, the AURA show illustrates this meeting of art and contemplation. Designed to reveal the beauty of the architecture through light and music, the experience respects the rhythm of the nave, the silences of the choir, and the symbolism of the stained glass. The Foundation supported its implementation step by step: positioning of the heavy-duty speakers, scheduling around mass times, and staff training in cultural mediation.
The goal was to help people rediscover the Basilica by revealing its often-hidden qualities. This goal has been met: thousands of visitors, believers and non-believers alike, have experienced a moving and memorable event, one that reveals and deepens the space. The AURA presentation remains as popular today as ever.
Culture at the Basilica
For the Foundation, this approach – a balance between serenity and entertainment - allows Montreal’s Notre-Dame Basilica to remain a living space where wonder takes many forms. It is a historic site where modern culture can be integrated into a spiritual setting in surprising ways, for the enjoyment of all. Come and discover it for yourself!
