Here is a look back at five occasions when this neo-Gothic nave transformed into a studio, a royal chapel, and a patriotic sanctuary, leaving behind unforgetable images in our collective memory.
December 17, 1994: Céline Dion and René Angélil’s Wedding
Broadcast live across Canada and even in the United States, the ceremony brought together 600 guests, 30 cameras, and a wedding dress adorned with 2,000 crystals. The bells of La Tempérance and La Persévérance towers rang out, providing a resounding musical setting for the couple.
October 3, 2000: State Funeral of Pierre Elliott Trudeau
The former Prime Minister of Canada entered Notre-Dame Basilica beneath a trilingual honour guard composed of members of the Canadian Armed Forces, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and the Sûreté du Québec. Nearly 15,000 Montrealers gathered on Place d’Armes to pay their final respects, while the grand Casavant organ played Berlioz’s Funeral and Triumphal Symphony.
The mass was celebrated by Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte, Archbishop of Montreal, in the presence of dignitaries such as Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, Governor General Adrienne Clarkson, Cuban President Fidel Castro, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, and federal party leaders Gilles Duceppe, Joe Clark, and Alexa McDonough. Trudeau’s sons, Justin and Sacha, delivered heartfelt tributes, marking a ceremony filled with solemnity and emotion.
May 16, 2000: National Funeral of Maurice “Rocket” Richard
The body of Maurice “Rocket” Richard lay in state for two days at Notre-Dame Basilica, where 115,000 people came to pay tribute. The homily, delivered by Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte, celebrated his perseverance and influence far beyond hockey.
Petals surrounded his wooden hockey stick, placed on the cold stone like ice. Among the dignitaries present were Jean Chrétien, Lucien Bouchard, Jean Béliveau, Gordie Howe, and several former teammates who came to honor a legend turned national symbol.
December 1978: Luciano Pavarotti Christmas Concert
Recorded for American television, the recital by the great Italian tenor highlighted the sumptuous acoustics of the nave. His performance concluded with Adeste Fideles, where the echo extended each “Gloria” for seven seconds, an auditory phenomenon that became legendary.
January 22, 2016: Funeral of René Angélil
Twenty-two years after his wedding in the same location, the producer returned for his final earthly journey. Céline, veiled, lit a candle at the foot of the modernized choir. The event was covered by 75 international broadcasters.
